YA!
- Maine, 1993
THEME
Meaning "Me!" in Russian, Ya! explored identity issues between
Russian and American young people. Many of the young cast members experienced
similar pressures and feelings despite language and cultural barriers.
Most felt they were walking that tightrope between childhood and adolescence,
trying to figure out who they really are and what they stand for. The
cast created a play that dramatized this search, as their characters found
their way into their inner selves through trial and error utilizing puppets,
magic and adventure. "Ya" was co-directed by Hilari Scarl from
the U.S. and Artur Bogotov of Russia, bringing together Russian and American
young people for the first time after the Cold War. The production succeeded
not only artistically, but also in forging deep and lasting friendships
and visits.
